Luna was the neighbours' cat. She made friends with me first, and when the neighbours moved away they asked whether I would adopt her. In truth she had already adopted me. She was about six months old.
We moved house twice in the years that followed. She came both times and stayed. She loved going on walks with me. Behind our last place there was a field, and she caught mice in it for years. On working days she usually slept on my desk.
The ear went because of the sun. She loved sleeping in it, the ear became infected, and the vet had to remove it. She carried on exactly as before. It was the first thing people noticed about her and the last thing anyone forgot.
She died on 28 August 2026, aged twenty.
